Convert Aruba AP-315 to IAP

By

Installing InstantOS image

Upgrade the OS with the command upgrade os 0 [firmware_filename], replacing [firmware_filename] with the file in that you placed in the root folder of your TFTP server. For example:

upgrade os 0 ArubaInstant_Hercules_8.11.1.0_86591

Also upgrade the OS image in the AP’s second slot:

upgrade os 1 ArubaInstant_Hercules_8.11.1.0_86591

Finishing touches

Do a factory reset of the AP to avoid any issues with old settings:

factory_reset

Save the configuration:

saveenv

Reboot the AP:

reset

You can monitor the console messages while your device reboots to check for any errors and confirm that it is running on the new InstantOS firmware that was installed. You should now be able to manage the AP through its web interface, which can be accessed by using the AP’s IP address in your web browser.

Additional Comments

The original inspiration for this guide is from this ServeTheHome forum post.

If you already have an existing Aruba controller, there are other ways to convert to an IAP using the controller. See the Aruba documentation available here.

For additional reference regarding the console port and pinout, see this webpage from throughtheether.net and this Airheads Community forum post.

For more information about apboot, refer to this Aruba documentation.
